University of Notre Dame | Just Transformations to Sustainability InitiativeIn partnership with the University of MichiganLocation: Notre Dame, IndianaDeadline: January 12, 2026, 11:59 PM Eastern Time About the Position The University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with strong quantitative expertise in socio-ecological systems. Ideal areas of specialization include geospatial analysis, integration of environmental and social datasets, causal inference, and evidence synthesis or meta-analysis. The Fellow will lead analytical work within a global working group synthesizing evidence on biodiversity, climate, and social outcomes of community-based conservation (CBC) across land and coastal ecosystems. The synthesis aims to deepen understanding of CBC impacts, drivers, and future trajectories in a changing climate. The working group includes interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners from institutions based in the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Madagascar, India, and Indonesia. Key Responsibilities The Postdoctoral Fellow will: Lead a systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature on CBC, including conceptual synthesis and development of a CBC typology and framework. Compile, harmonize, and analyze multi-scale social, environmental, and climate data related to CBC. Support horizon scanning and Delphi-style foresight exercises to capture expert perspectives on CBC’s future. Co-author high-impact interdisciplinary publications in sustainability and environmental science. Contribute to grant writing, proposal development, and long-term data-sharing infrastructure. Engage with global partners and practitioners to produce policy-relevant and accessible outputs. The Fellow will join a cohort of postdoctoral researchers supporting sustainability-focused research efforts across Notre Dame and Michigan, contributing to integrated ecological, social, economic, and ethical solutions. Position Details Appointment: Full-time, one-year initial contract, renewable for a second year depending on performance and funding. Start Date: Preferred start date is February 15, 2026, with flexibility. Location: Based at the University of Notre Dame, with opportunities for collaborative visits to the University of Michigan and the University of Manchester (UK). This search is led by Notre Dame’s Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative and Michigan’s Institute of Global Change Biology, as part of a broader international effort examining biodiversity–climate interactions. Required Qualifications Ph.D. completed by start date in: Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Science, Economics, Sustainability Studies, Conservation Biology, or another quantitative field. Demonstrated expertise in: Geospatial analysis, data harmonization, or large-scale evidence synthesis. Programming in ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, R, Python, or related tools. Experience managing and analyzing complex spatial or temporal datasets. A strong publication record in quantitative sustainability research. Excellent communication skills and ability to work across disciplines and geographies. Preferred: Experience related to community-based conservation in terrestrial and/or marine systems.
