Professional Placement A key feature of the SEDarc programme is a three-month professional placement for full-time students. Placement opportunities can be within the public, private or academic sectors. SEDarc has approximately 40 placement partners, although students are also encouraged to identify a placement organisation that aligns with their professional ambitions. Applicants are expected to indicate potential placement partners as part of their application. Eligibility Requirements The studentships are open to UK and international candidates applying for eligible doctoral research programmes at the University of Surrey. Applicants should develop a research project that fits within the relevant Surrey subject area and SEDarc’s research themes. Prospective students must also identify and engage with an appropriate academic supervisor before applying. International candidates are eligible, subject to the consortium’s 30% cap on international studentships. How to Apply Applicants cannot apply directly to SEDarc for the initial stage. Candidates wishing to be based at the University of Surrey must first apply through the University. The application process involves several stages: Identify a prospective supervisor and discuss the proposed research project before applying. Complete the SEDarc Doctoral Training Partnership application form, with input from the proposed supervisor. Apply for an eligible Surrey PhD course with an October 2027 start date. Submit the completed SEDarc application form to the relevant postgraduate director and inform them that the candidate is applying for SEDarc funding. The deadline for the Surrey PhD application and submission of the SEDarc form is 18 January 2027 at 4:00 PM. Applicants must have been interviewed by their proposed supervisor by this date. Shortlisted candidates will be notified on 22 January 2027 and invited to submit their application to SEDarc by 29 January 2027 at 4:00 PM, allowing them to incorporate feedback from the Surrey shortlisting panel. How to Strengthen an Application Applicants should begin early by identifying a supervisor whose research expertise closely matches their proposed project. A strong application should demonstrate a clear research question, strong methodological thinking and a convincing connection between the project and one of the SEDarc thematic areas. Candidates should also consider how their proposed professional placement could contribute to their research, career development and wider impact. Why Apply for the SEDarc Studentship? The SEDarc studentship offers an opportunity to undertake doctoral research with significant financial support while gaining interdisciplinary research training and professional experience. The combination of tuition-fee support, a UKRI-rate stipend and a structured professional placement makes the programme particularly valuable for researchers interested in addressing major social, economic, environmental and technological challenges. Important Information The studentship is highly competitive, and meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding. International applicants should pay particular attention to the consortium’s international studentship cap. Applicants should also verify the latest funding rates, application requirements and programme information directly with the University of Surrey before submitting an application.
