The University of Tartu is inviting applications for the position of Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence within the Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Computer Science. Research Context and Role Purpose The Research Fellow will join a collaborative research project led_jobs by the Data Systems group at the Chair of Data Science. The overarching goal of the project is to democratise the data science process by developing approaches that align with the practical needs of industries across diverse technology sectors. A central focus of the role is Responsible AI, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of ethical, transparent, and trustworthy artificial intelligence methods. The position is designed to support increasingly independent research while remaining embedded in a highly collaborative research environment. The successful candidate will contribute to high-impact scientific outputs and actively engage in academic dissemination through publications and conferences. Key Duties and Responsibilities The Research Fellow will be responsible for a broad range of academic and research activities, including: Conducting high-quality research on innovative methods in Responsible AI under the guidance of the research group leader Actively contributing to the objectives and deliverables of the collaborative research project Writing and submitting scientific articles to high-impact international journals and conferences Presenting research findings at leading academic conferences and workshops Supporting the preparation of new research proposals in collaboration with senior colleagues Participating in teaching activities, including the supervision of MSc and PhD students This role combines research excellence with academic mentorship, offering the opportunity to shape both scientific outcomes and future researchers in the field. Required Qualifications Applicants are expected to meet the following academic requirements: A PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a closely related discipline Alternatively, an equivalent qualification demonstrating advanced expertise in AI-related research Required Experience and Skills The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong research and technical profile, including: A proven track record of publications in high-quality journals and international conferences Very strong programming skills, particularly in Python Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks and AI development tools Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and collaborative research teams Prior experience supervising MSc or PhD students is considered an advantage Strong analytical thinking, independence in research, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly are essential for success in this role. Language Requirements Excellent command of English is required for research, teaching, and publication Knowledge of Estonian is an advantage but not mandatory at the time of appointment In accordance with the Estonian Language Act, academic staff with foreign citizenship are required to achieve at least B1-level proficiency in Estonian within five years of employment. The University’s Centre for Professional Development provides Estonian language courses for international staff and their family members.
