Verra manages a globally recognized portfolio of standards, including: Verified Carbon Standard (VCS):The world’s leading voluntary carbon crediting program, with more than 2,000 registered projects across 80 countries, accounting for approximately two-thirds of global voluntary carbon market transaction volume. Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta):A flexible framework for assessing and reporting the sustainable development benefits of project-based activities. Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards:Standards recognizing projects that deliver climate mitigation while supporting local communities and conserving biodiversity. Plastic Waste Reduction Program:A program enabling credible impact assessment for waste recovery and recycling initiatives worldwide. Position Overview Title: Director, Development Location: Remote, worldwide (with significant overlap with U.S. business hours) Reports to: Chief Financial Officer The Opportunity Verra is at a pivotal stage of growth, expanding its global influence and impact. To support this trajectory, the organization is seeking an experienced and strategic fundraising leader to establish and scale its development function. This newly created role offers the opportunity to build Verra’s revenue operations from the ground up, shaping long-term funding strategies that support organizational sustainability and mission delivery. The Director of Development will lead all aspects of fundraising and revenue generation, including philanthropic giving, institutional grants, and corporate partnerships. This role is central to diversifying revenue streams, strengthening donor relationships, and unlocking new funding opportunities that enable Verra to accelerate climate action and deliver measurable global outcomes. Key Responsibilities The Director of Development will: Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy aligned with Verra’s mission and long-term growth objectives Lead fundraising efforts across multiple revenue streams, including: Philanthropic giving and major gifts Institutional and foundation grants Corporate partnerships and sponsorships Identify, research, and cultivate new funding prospects, with a focus on climate-focused donors and foundations Drive donor acquisition, retention, and stewardship through innovative approaches such as: Digital fundraising campaigns Donor events and engagement initiatives Diversified revenue strategies Oversee grant proposal development, submission, compliance, and reporting processes Build and manage a robust donor pipeline, tracking prospects and cultivation strategies Lead CRM system implementation and optimization to ensure accurate donor data management and strategic insight generation Produce high-quality fundraising materials, including proposals, donor presentations, and impact reports Track and analyze fundraising performance metrics, providing data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement Represent Verra at external events, conferences, and networking opportunities to strengthen organizational visibility Collaborate cross-functionally with communications, marketing, finance, legal, and program teams to align development efforts Ensure adherence to legal, ethical, and compliance standards in all fundraising activities Mentor and support global team members on development best practices, donor engagement, and CRM use Lead organizational change management related to fundraising systems, processes, and culture Support budgeting, forecasting, and progress tracking against fundraising goals The Team and Values Verra’s team includes professionals from diverse geographies and disciplines, such as carbon market experts, project developers, auditors, researchers, and policy specialists. Required Experience and Qualifications Ideal candidates will demonstrate: At least 10 years of experience in development, including five or more years in progressive leadership roles A degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, environmental policy, or a related field Proven success in: Major gifts and high-net-worth donor engagement Institutional grant fundraising and management Corporate partnerships and donor stewardship Experience managing donor pipelines, prospect research, and fundraising campaigns Hands-on expertise with CRM systems and donor data analytics; CRM administrator certification preferred Strong grant writing and compliance management experience Strategic leadership skills and the ability to execute multi-channel fundraising strategies Financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and performance tracking Excellent written and verbal communication skills Experience in environmental, sustainability, or climate-focused organizations Familiarity with international donor landscapes, CSR funding, and digital fundraising platforms Compensation and Benefits Compensation is competitive and location-dependent.
