Vi Agroforestry has opened applications for the position of Mount Elgon Livelihoods Project Coordinator based in Kitale, Kenya. The role is part of the organisation’s long-term climate change mitigation and adaptation initiative aimed at improving livelihoods among smallholder farmers within the Mount Elgon watershed region. The position offers a two-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of renewal, subject to performance and organisational needs. The successful candidate will support implementation of sustainable agriculture and climate resilience interventions across Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties. Applications close on 26 May 2026. About Vi Agroforestry Vi Agroforestry is a Swedish development organisation focused on combating poverty and climate change through sustainable agriculture and agroforestry practices. Established in 1983 as a tree-planting initiative, the organisation has evolved into an international development agency working with smallholder farmers across East Africa. The organisation operates in: Kenya Uganda Tanzania Vi Agroforestry supports farmer families through Sustainable Agriculture Land Management (SALM) approaches that promote: Climate resilience Food security Biodiversity conservation Sustainable livelihoods Gender equality Environmental restoration The organisation works primarily through local partnerships with member-based farmer organisations and community groups. About the Mount Elgon Livelihoods Project The Mount Elgon Livelihoods Project is a climate mitigation and adaptation initiative scheduled to run until 2036. The project targets smallholder farmers within the Mount Elgon watershed region in western Kenya. The initiative aims to support farming communities in achieving environmentally sustainable and economically viable livelihoods through climate-smart agricultural practices. Key focus areas include: Agroforestry systems Sustainable land management Climate adaptation and mitigation Carbon sequestration Biodiversity conservation Food security and nutrition Community-based environmental management The project also supports income generation and resilience-building among vulnerable farming communities. Purpose of the Position The Mount Elgon Livelihoods Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating project implementation and strengthening the capacity of smallholder farmers in sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation practices. The successful candidate will oversee project delivery in accordance with: The Mount Elgon Project document Sustainable Agriculture Land Management methodology Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement requirements Vi Agroforestry operational standards The Project Coordinator will report directly to the Carbon Projects Manager. Key Responsibilities The selected candidate will lead coordination and implementation activities across the project area. Main responsibilities include: Providing technical support on agroforestry and sustainable land management Coordinating project officers, community facilitators, and partner organisations Developing annual work plans and budgets Supporting climate change adaptation and mitigation activities Overseeing farmer group capacity strengthening Supporting community-driven monitoring and evaluation systems Ensuring adherence to SALM methodologies and project standards Coordinating income-generating and livelihood improvement activities Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual project reports Strengthening collaboration with government agencies and local stakeholders The role also includes supporting farmer organisations in financial resource mobilisation and quality assurance for project data collection. Required Qualifications and Experience Applicants must possess relevant academic and professional qualifications related to sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, or development programming. Minimum requirements include: University degree in a relevant field Knowledge of grant management and donor compliance Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications Professional experience requirements include: Minimum five years of NGO sector experience At least three years in leadership roles Experience in agroforestry and sustainable agriculture land management Experience in climate change mitigation and carbon sequestration projects At least two years of project management experience Language requirements: Fluency in English Fluency in Kiswahili Desired Competencies Vi Agroforestry is seeking candidates with strong technical and interpersonal skills. Preferred competencies include: Strategic thinking and analytical ability Leadership and decision-making skills Strong communication and collaboration skills Accountability and integrity Planning and organisational skills Creativity and flexibility Team-oriented approach Self-driven and structured work ethic The organisation is particularly interested in professionals capable of working effectively with farmer organisations, community groups, and multiple stakeholders.
