The international human rights organization Videre is seeking an experienced Database Manager to lead the management and development of its secure information systems. This role supports the organization’s mission of documenting and exposing human rights abuses through technology-driven investigative methods. The position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of human rights investigations, data security, and emerging technologies, helping communities document and report violations safely and effectively. About Videre Videre is an award-winning NGO registered in the United Kingdom that works with activists and community leaders in conflict-affected environments. The organization equips local networks with technology and training to: Document political violence and human rights abuses Capture secure visual evidence of violations Support advocacy, policy change, and legal accountability Videre operates teams and partnerships across several countries and works closely with local communities to ensure their evidence and perspectives shape international human rights advocacy. Role Overview The Database Manager will oversee the strategic and operational management of Videre’s information systems, particularly those used for secure investigative data management. The role includes maintaining existing systems, developing improved data infrastructure, and supporting investigative teams to use databases and analysis tools effectively. Key aspects of the role include: Managing secure investigative data platforms Strengthening relational database systems Supporting evidence verification workflows Leading responsible integration of AI tools in investigations Ensuring compliance with international data protection standards Location and Employment Terms The organization prefers candidates based in one of the following locations: Nairobi, Kenya Kampala, Uganda Bangkok, Thailand However, remote applicants may also be considered. Additional employment details: Travel: Approximately 20 days per year Annual Leave: Minimum of 28 days Wellbeing Support: Counselling services and annual wellbeing days Compensation Salary is location-dependent and calculated using international salary scales. Equivalent to £65,000 UK salary Adjusted using International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) salary scales Paid in local currency depending on the employee’s location Key Responsibilities The Database Manager will play a central role in managing secure data systems and supporting investigative teams. Systems Management and Optimization Responsibilities include: Managing Videre’s secure information management systems Maintaining closed-source video management infrastructure Monitoring system performance and troubleshooting issues Coordinating with external vendors and technology providers Documenting system architecture and operational protocols Strategic Development and System Migration The role also involves strategic planning for improved data systems. Key tasks include: Assessing existing platforms and identifying improvements Recommending new data management tools Leading system migrations from planning to implementation Ensuring data integrity and operational continuity during transitions Relational Database Development The Database Manager will strengthen the organization’s analytical capacity through advanced data modeling. Key functions include: Designing relational database structures Supporting cross-referencing and pattern analysis Enabling evidence-based investigative analysis Verification and Investigative Workflows To support accountability efforts, the database systems must meet high verification standards. Responsibilities include: Ensuring metadata preservation and chain-of-custody protocols Supporting investigative teams in documenting evidence Enhancing traceability and transparency in data workflows AI Integration and Innovation The role includes leading internal exploration of emerging technologies. Key innovation responsibilities include: Monitoring developments in AI relevant to human rights investigations Evaluating tools for video analysis, transcription, and classification Developing guidelines for ethical and secure AI use Piloting AI-enabled investigative technologies Capacity Building and Team Support A major component of the role involves supporting both staff and partner organizations. Responsibilities include: Training staff to use database systems effectively Developing user guides and data entry protocols Supporting civil society partners in secure data management Bridging technical systems with investigative workflows Data Protection and Compliance The Database Manager will serve as Videre’s Data Protection Lead. Key duties include: Ensuring compliance with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Developing data protection policies and procedures Establishing secure data retention frameworks Training staff on responsible handling of sensitive data Required Skills and Experience Applicants should demonstrate strong technical and investigative data management experience.
