Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) is Seeking a Grant Writer and Researcher
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

December 26, 2025

Description

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) is a leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing human rights across the Americas. Guided by a vision of public policies that protect human rights and honor human dignity, WOLA builds strategic partnerships with individuals and institutions driving social change. These include advocacy groups, academic experts, civil society leaders, artists, and government officials. As an organization committed to justice, collaboration, and integrity, WOLA works to ensure that its internal culture reflects the same values it advocates for—creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive workplace where all staff feel valued, empowered, and respected. Within WOLA, the development team plays a central role in sustaining the organization’s mission by expanding philanthropic partnerships that make its human rights advocacy possible. Their fundraising efforts focus on two primary streams: individual giving and institutional partnerships. The Grant Writer and Researcher will contribute directly to the growth of institutional partnerships, supporting foundation and international government relationships that are essential to advancing WOLA’s work. Position Overview The Grant Writer and Researcher will serve as a key contributor to WOLA’s institutional partnerships strategy, managing the organization’s grants portfolio and supporting donor cultivation and stewardship efforts. This position requires exceptional writing ability, strategic thinking, and a passion for human rights and social justice. While most written materials will be produced in English, the role occasionally requires communication or document preparation in Spanish. Importantly, WOLA does not accept funding from the United States government. The individual in this role will draft concept notes, proposals, reports, and other written materials; research new philanthropic opportunities; ensure grant compliance; and support smooth coordination across departments, particularly with WOLA’s finance and program teams. They must be able to synthesize complex academic-style information into clear, compelling written content that resonates with institutional funders. The Grant Writer and Researcher reports directly to the Vice President for External Relations. Key Responsibilities Managing WOLA’s Foundation and International Government Grants Portfolio (65%) Draft concept notes, grant proposals, and funder reports, overseeing the full writing and editing process. Collaborate with the finance team to ensure timely completion of budgets and financial reporting. Track grant deadlines and maintain accurate records of grant data and funder interactions in WOLA’s online database. Support internal understanding of grant compliance requirements by communicating relevant obligations to staff. Supporting Prospecting, Cultivation, and Stewardship of Grant Supporters (25%) Assist the Vice President for External Relations in managing ongoing relationships with foundation and international government donors. Conduct research to identify new institutional donors and help develop cultivation strategies. Draft email updates and funder communications. Provide talking points, funder profiles, and other background information to the development team and program staff. Providing High-Level Writing and Editing Support (10%) Write and edit institutional materials such as email campaigns, donor communications, major donor proposals, and other organizational documents. Qualifications The qualifications below serve as a guide rather than strict requirements. WOLA welcomes candidates whose skills and experiences align with the spirit of the role, even if they do not meet every listed criterion. Full professional fluency in written and spoken English; Spanish proficiency is helpful but not required. Minimum of four years of experience writing grants or reports for nonprofit organizations. Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing. Strong interest in international public policy, particularly relating to Latin America, with a clear commitment to human rights and social justice. Solid research skills and familiarity with foundation research tools. Experience working with fundraising or donor management systems is an asset. Ability to translate complex ideas into concise, accessible written products. Willingness to travel internationally and work occasional long hours or weekends as needed. Ability to work hybrid or remotely within the United States. While the DMV area is preferred, WOLA will consider qualified candidates based elsewhere in the U.S. In-person attendance may be required for certain events or travel. Compensation and Work Environment The salary range for this position is $62,000–$75,000, depending on experience and skills. WOLA offers comprehensive benefits including fully paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance; four weeks of vacation; four weeks of sick leave; twelve weeks of parental leave; and office closure between Christmas and New Year’s. Application Process WOLA is accepting applications on a rolling basis and interviewing candidates as materials are received. The posting will remain open until the position is filled. The ideal start date is as soon as possible. Applicants should submit the following to employment@wola.org: A 1–2 page resume A 1–2 page cover letter describing interest in the role and experience with institutional partnerships A two-page writing sample Spanish proficiency will be assessed during the interview process. Only selected candidates will be contacted within three weeks of applying. No phone calls or personal emails are permitted. WOLA is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. The organization encourages applicants of all backgrounds, including those who may not meet 100 percent of the qualifications.
