The Wellcome has officially opened applications for the Wellcome Accelerator Awards 2026, a prestigious funding opportunity designed to support researchers of Black, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani heritage across the United Kingdom. The initiative aims to address underrepresentation and career progression barriers experienced by researchers from these communities within academia and research funding systems. Through flexible financial support and career development opportunities, the programme seeks to strengthen the professional profiles of researchers and help them advance to the next stage of their academic careers. The funding scheme will remain open annually until 2028. Funding Opportunity Designed to Advance Academic Careers The Wellcome Accelerator Awards provide flexible funding for both research and research-adjacent activities. The programme focuses on helping researchers build stronger academic profiles, develop leadership skills, expand networks, and improve long-term career prospects. The awards are specifically intended to support researchers in becoming more competitive for: Future research grants Academic promotions Research leadership positions Professional recognition Collaborative opportunities The programme aligns with Wellcome’s broader commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion within research and higher education. Funding Amount and Duration Successful applicants may receive: Salary support (if required) Up to £200,000 for project-related expenses Award Duration Funding period: Up to 2 years The funding can be used flexibly depending on the applicant’s proposed career development and research plan. Who Is Eligible to Apply? The Wellcome Accelerator Awards are specifically open to researchers who self-identify as belonging to one of the following heritage backgrounds: Eligible Heritage Groups Black heritage backgrounds Bangladeshi heritage backgrounds Pakistani heritage backgrounds Mixed heritage backgrounds including these identities Applicants must also: Be currently working in the UK or ordinarily resident in the UK Hold either: An undergraduate degree from a UK institution A PhD from a UK institution Have completed substantial research training Eligible Career Stages The scheme targets: Early-career researchers Mid-career researchers Applicants must demonstrate readiness to transition into the next stage of their academic or research careers. Research Training Requirements Eligible candidates must meet at least one of the following: Completed a PhD or equivalent research degree Passed a PhD viva before the application deadline Possess at least four years of equivalent research experience The programme also accommodates researchers who have experienced career breaks, part-time work, parental leave, or long-term illness. Flexible Funding for Research and Career Development One of the key strengths of the Accelerator Awards is the flexibility of supported activities. Activities That Can Be Funded Include: Pilot and proof-of-concept studies Novel research development Research skills training Writing papers, books, and grant applications Networking and collaborative meetings International research placements Research secondments Conference participation Professional development activities Applicants are encouraged to design activities that best support their long-term career progression. Research Areas Supported If the proposed work includes research activity, it must align with Wellcome’s Discovery Research remit, which focuses on human life, health, and wellbeing. Eligible Research-Adjacent Activities May Include: Public health writing projects Training programmes Pharmaceutical industry placements NGO research secondments Interdisciplinary collaboration initiatives The awards support both traditional academic research and broader professional development opportunities connected to health and wellbeing research careers. Covered Costs Include: Continuing professional development (CPD) Travel and subsistence Materials and consumables Equipment Public engagement activities Clinical research costs Open access publication fees Fieldwork expenses Overseas research allowances Networking and conference participation This broad support structure allows awardees to tailor their development plans to their career goals. Career Development and Research Culture Focus A major emphasis of the Accelerator Awards is improving research culture and supporting inclusive academic environments. Assessment Criteria for Applications Applications will be assessed based on three major areas. Key Evaluation Areas 1. Career Vision and Ambitions (35%) Applicants must clearly explain: Their short-term career goals Long-term professional vision How the award supports career progression 2. Project Plan (35%) Reviewers will assess: Feasibility of proposed activities Clarity of objectives Alignment between activities and career development 3. Applicant Track Record (30%) The assessment will consider: Research contributions Publications and knowledge dissemination Mentorship and leadership activities Community and academic engagement Important Dates for Applicants Key Timeline Information Webinar: June 2, 2026 Application Deadline: August 25, 2026 at 15:00 BST Shortlisting: October 2026 Final Funding Decisions: Mid-December 2026 Wellcome has also scheduled an information webinar featuring previous awardees and committee members to help applicants better understand the programme and application process.
