The World Health Organization (WHO) is inviting applications for the senior leadership position of Director, Communications (Grade D2), based at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. This high-impact role offers a unique opportunity to shape global health narratives, guide strategic communications at the highest political levels, and strengthen WHO’s global influence during a critical period for international public health. This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for two years, with the possibility of extension, and applications close on 16 January 2026. About the Role The Director of Communications will lead WHO’s Department of Communications, which serves as the organization’s central hub for global advocacy, political engagement, strategic communications, and resource mobilization. The department plays a pivotal role in ensuring WHO speaks with one clear, credible, and authoritative voice across headquarters, regional, and country offices. Reporting directly to senior leadership, the Director will advise the Director-General and Executive Leadership on politically sensitive communications matters, particularly during global health emergencies and high-stakes international events. The role is instrumental in positioning WHO as the world’s preeminent authority on global public health. Key Responsibilities The Director, Communications will be responsible for shaping and implementing WHO’s global communications strategy, with duties including: Leading the development and execution of a strategic global communications vision aligned with WHO’s mission and priorities Advising senior leadership on complex political, reputational, and crisis communications issues Overseeing consistent messaging, brand alignment, and storytelling across all levels of the organization Directing global media relations and crisis communication strategies, including responses to misinformation and disinformation Establishing robust systems for impact assessment, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement Managing and mentoring a diverse, multidisciplinary communications workforce Building and sustaining high-level partnerships with global media, Member States, UN agencies, donors, and strategic partners Supporting resource mobilization efforts through targeted communications and donor engagement strategies The role requires a balance of strategic vision, political acumen, creative leadership, and operational excellence. Required Qualifications and Experience WHO is seeking an exceptional communications leader with a strong international profile. Education An advanced university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, public health, business management, social sciences, or a related field is required A PhD or specialized training in communications, journalism, marketing, or international/public relations is considered an asset Experience A minimum of 15 years of senior-level professional experience in communications and/or public relations Proven experience advising senior decision-makers and managing large teams and budgets Demonstrated international experience, preferably within multilateral or UN systems Skills and Competencies Expert knowledge of global communications strategy, media relations, branding, and journalism Strong leadership, diplomatic, and negotiation skills Proven success in global advocacy, crisis communications, and reputation management Deep understanding of the global health landscape and multilateral systems Ability to lead through complexity, innovation, and high-pressure environments Languages Expert knowledge of English is essential Intermediate knowledge of French is desirable Remuneration and Benefits WHO offers a competitive international compensation package. The position includes: Annual base salary starting at USD 128,422, plus a monthly post adjustment (currently approximately USD 9,632 for Geneva) 30 days of annual leave Dependency allowances, home leave, and education grants for dependent children Access to parental leave and flexible work arrangements Pension and health insurance benefits Commitment to Diversity and Integrity WHO is committed to gender parity, geographical diversity, and inclusion.
