WCS Mongolia Programme Overview Established in 2003, WCS Mongolia has over two decades of experience advancing wildlife conservation across Mongolia’s vast steppe, desert, and mountain ecosystems. The programme’s work is grounded in science-based, landscape-level conservation, with core focus areas including: The Southern Gobi The Eastern Steppe Emerging initiatives in Central Mongolia WCS Mongolia also engages at the national level, supporting conservation policy, protected area management, and sustainable land-use planning. In 2024, the programme launched a five-year strategic plan centred on three pillars: Enhancing ecological function Strengthening landscape connectivity Building resilience to climate change These priorities guide all programme activities with the long-term vision of safeguarding Mongolia’s ecological integrity for future generations. Position Summary The Conservation Biologist will play a central role in advancing applied ecological research and conservation planning under the Connectivity and Climate Change Team. The position focuses on understanding how key wildlife species respond to habitat fragmentation, human pressure, and climate variability across Mongolia’s steppe and desert ecosystems. Target species include: Mongolian gazelle Goitered gazelle Khulan Snow leopard The role integrates field ecology, spatial and quantitative data analysis, and science communication to inform landscape-scale conservation strategies, policy engagement, and donor reporting. The Conservation Biologist will work closely with internal teams and external partners to translate ecological data into practical conservation outcomes. Key Responsibilities 1. Research Design and Field Implementation Support the design and coordination of ecological studies on wildlife movement, connectivity, and climate resilience Develop and apply standardized field methods, including camera trapping and GPS collaring Ensure high standards of data quality, scientific rigour, and ethical compliance Participate in and support fieldwork across steppe, desert, and mountain landscapes 2. Data Management and Analysis Manage, curate, and archive ecological and spatial datasets Conduct quantitative and spatial analyses, including: Habitat and connectivity modelling Movement and population analyses Spatial statistics Integrate ecological data with climate, land-use, and socio-environmental datasets Produce high-quality maps, figures, and data visualisations 3. Science Communication and Reporting Draft and co-author technical reports, donor deliverables, and peer-reviewed publications Synthesize research findings to inform conservation planning and national policy processes Support preparation of presentations, workshops, and technical briefs 4. Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing Collaborate with WCS teams, government agencies, research institutions, and local partners Represent WCS Mongolia at technical meetings, workshops, and conferences Contribute to internal capacity building in ecological monitoring and data analysis 5. Programme Support and Engagement Support project planning, implementation, and monitoring Contribute to stakeholder engagement with protected area authorities and local communities Participate in training activities, outreach events, and field missions Support fundraising and partnership development within the Connectivity and Climate Change portfolio Promote an inclusive, collaborative, and learning-oriented team culture Qualifications and Experience Required qualifications include: MSc in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field Minimum five years of professional experience in wildlife ecology or conservation science Demonstrated experience conducting field-based ecological research in remote environments Strong proficiency in R, GIS, and spatial or ecological data analysis tools Proven record of scientific writing, including reports and peer-reviewed publications Excellent written and spoken communication skills in Mongolian and English A PhD is considered an advantage but is not required.
