The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is inviting applications for a Carbon Markets Analyst position that offers professionals an opportunity to contribute to climate finance, carbon market development and sustainable development across Africa. UNDP Carbon Markets Analyst Job 2026 The Carbon Markets Analyst will work within UNDP’s Nature, Climate and Energy practice area and support the Climate Action, Disaster Risk Reduction, Resilience and Energy portfolio of the UNDP Sub-Regional Hub for West and Central Africa. The role is connected to a regional initiative titled “Scaling up carbon finance to preserve the Congo Basin Forests.” The initiative covers Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and the Republic of Congo. The successful candidate will contribute to regional technical coordination, partnerships and country-level support for designing, financing and scaling high-integrity carbon initiatives aligned with national climate priorities. The position is particularly relevant for professionals with experience in carbon markets, climate finance, the Paris Agreement, REDD+ and environmental policy. What Will the Carbon Markets Analyst Do? The Analyst will provide strategic, technical and policy support aimed at strengthening the enabling environment for carbon markets in the Congo Basin. A major part of the position involves supporting governments with carbon market strategies, operational guidelines and institutional coordination mechanisms. The Analyst will also help promote harmonised approaches to carbon market development across the Congo Basin and Central Africa. The successful candidate will also support the development of carbon credit projects and market transactions. Responsibilities include providing technical advice on carbon credit projects, supporting REDD+ programmes and assisting governments with technical requirements such as Forest Reference Emission Levels (FRELs). The role will further involve supporting transaction-ready REDD+ investment programmes and engaging private-sector partners and investors interested in carbon projects and mitigation outcomes. Climate and Carbon Finance Responsibilities Another important component of the position is helping countries mobilise climate and carbon finance. The Analyst will support the development of carbon finance programmes and investment pipelines, national climate finance registries and systems for tracking and reporting climate finance and carbon market transactions. The position also includes supporting feasibility studies, technical assessments and pre-feasibility analyses, as well as preparing concept notes and funding proposals for the Green Climate Fund (GCF), including REDD+ Results-Based Payment proposals. Stakeholder engagement will be important, with the Analyst expected to support meaningful participation from governments, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, civil society organisations, development partners and private-sector actors. Knowledge Management and Partnerships The Carbon Markets Analyst will also contribute to strategic partnerships involving governments, regional organisations, development partners, multilateral climate funds, academic institutions, private-sector organisations and carbon market initiatives. The successful candidate may represent UNDP at relevant regional and international technical meetings, working groups and carbon market forums. Other responsibilities include preparing technical reports, policy briefs, analytical papers and knowledge products covering carbon markets, Article 6 implementation, REDD+ and climate finance. The Analyst will also monitor international carbon market rules, standards and negotiations under the UNFCCC and advise UNDP and partner countries about their implications. Qualifications and Experience Candidates must have either an advanced university degree, such as a Master’s degree or equivalent, in Environmental Engineering, Climate Science, Climate Finance, Economics, Public Policy, Sustainable Development or a related field, or a first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience. Applicants with a Master’s degree need at least two years of relevant experience, while those with a Bachelor’s degree require at least four years of relevant experience. Relevant experience should include work supporting carbon markets, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Paris Agreement. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of the technical components involved in establishing carbon markets, including project certification, registries and supporting infrastructure. Knowledge of Article 6 UNFCCC decisions and independent carbon crediting programmes is required. Experience working with multilateral organisations or the UN system is an asset, while knowledge of climate action in Africa and experience in stakeholder engagement and policy dialogue are advantages. Language Requirements Fluency in both English and French, in written and spoken form, is required for the position. Home-Based Working Arrangement The position is home-based, making it an attractive opportunity for qualified professionals seeking international remote work. The successful candidate is expected to be online and fully available for eight hours during working days, participate in team calls and collaborate remotely with colleagues and partners. If travel is required, it will be covered by UNDP according to its applicable travel policies, with per diem arrangements based on the United Nations daily subsistence allowance rate.
