Payroll Officer at the (AUAF) American University of Afghanistan Organization: American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) Department: Finance Reports To: Senior Finance Manager Location: Remote / Outside Afghanistan Vacancy No: AF-N-02-2026 Posting Date: 26 January 2026 Closing Date: 7 February 2026 Organizational Background The American University of Afghanistan is the country’s only nationally accredited, private, non-profit, non-partisan, and coeducational institution of higher education Established in 2006 with an initial cohort of 50 students, AUAF has grown to serve more than 1,700 undergraduate, graduate, and professional training students The university is committed to providing equitable access to high-quality education across gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds Nearly half of AUAF’s undergraduate students are women, reflecting the institution’s strong commitment to inclusion and gender equality AUAF is supported by a diverse Afghan and international faculty and staff community working collaboratively to sustain American-style higher education despite ongoing political and security challenges Position Summary The Payroll Officer is responsible for end-to-end payroll processing, statutory deductions, payroll reporting, and compliance with applicable regulations The role ensures accurate and timely salary payments, government reporting, and reconciliation of payroll accounts The Payroll Officer supports the Finance Department by implementing payroll policies, managing salary advances, and contributing to efficient financial operations The position operates remotely and supports AUAF’s payroll functions outside Afghanistan Key Objectives and Outcomes Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing in line with AUAF finance policies Support the Finance Office in achieving its operational and reporting objectives Maintain high standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and service delivery Core Responsibilities Collect and review monthly timesheets and required supporting documentation from the Human Resources department Prepare and process employee compensation at the end of each payroll cycle using Dynamics 365 Ensure payroll transactions are processed accurately and efficiently Collect, calculate, and enter payroll data to maintain up-to-date records Compile summaries of earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, and leave balances and generate required payroll reports Calculate payroll liabilities, including salaries, benefits, taxes, and statutory deductions Identify, investigate, and resolve payroll discrepancies in a timely manner Schedule and process bank salary payments Prepare payroll expense reports as requested by management Enter and update employee payroll information, including bank details and tax identification numbers, in internal systems Maintain payroll operations in accordance with established policies and procedures Develop ad hoc financial and operational reports as required by the Finance Department Perform monthly and annual reconciliations between the general ledger and subsidiary payroll ledgers Follow up with staff on outstanding salary advances and related documentation Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor in support of finance operations Required Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field Minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in payroll or finance functions Prior experience using Dynamics 365 is a strong advantage Solid understanding of payroll processes, accounting cycles, and financial reporting standards Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is preferred Required Skills and Competencies Strong numerical and analytical skills with high attention to detail Ability to identify and correct payroll and numerical discrepancies Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Customer-oriented mindset with the ability to interact professionally with staff and students Strong communication and interpersonal skills Excellent decision-making and problem-solving abilities Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team Language Requirements Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, and English is required Work Ethic and Professional Standards Demonstrated consistency, reliability, and accountability in financial operations Commitment to AUAF’s values of integrity, inclusion, and equal opportunity Ability to adapt to a dynamic and remote working environment Application Process Applicants must submit their application through the AUAF job portal at https://auaf.webhr.co/hr/careers Applications must be submitted in English;
