Open Philanthropy — Remote (Global) Open Philanthropy is seeking a Program Officer for Science and Global Health R&D, a full-time remote position supporting one of the world’s most impactful philanthropic portfolios in biomedical innovation. The role sits within the Grantmaking team for Global Health Science and R&D and offers a rare opportunity to shape high-stakes vaccine development strategies, deepen global scientific partnerships, and accelerate R&D efforts with the potential to transform health outcomes at scale. About Open Philanthropy Open Philanthropy is a philanthropic funder and advisor committed to helping others as much as possible with the resources available. The organization operates with openness, analytical rigor, and a focus on areas with outstanding potential for impact. Current giving areas include Global Health and Development, Navigating Transformative AI, Global Public Health Policy, Farm Animal Welfare, and Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness. In 2024, the organization recommended $650 million in grants, bringing total recommendations to more than $4.5 billion since inception. About the Science & Global Health R&D Team The Science and Global Health R&D team invests in breakthrough research and novel product development—vaccines, diagnostics, drugs, and other tools—to address diseases with a substantial global health burden. The team is currently composed of four grantmakers led by Jacob Trefethen, awarding over $100 million annually. In 2026, the team expects to deploy tens of millions of dollars to accelerate Strep A vaccine development, a major priority area for the new Program Officer. About the Role Reporting directly to Program Officer Katharine Collins, the new Program Officer will help lead, refine, and expand grantmaking strategies focused on Strep A, malaria, and global health vaccine development. The role is ideal for a scientifically trained researcher who pairs technical fluency with strategic judgment about how to maximize global health impact. The Program Officer will independently conduct analytical research, evaluate scientific opportunities, meet with leading experts, and assess funding pathways. Over time, the role offers the opportunity to take on greater ownership within the portfolio. Deep prior specialization in Strep A is not required; candidates with adjacent biomedical expertise, strong reasoning, and broad scientific curiosity are encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities 1. Research and Grant Investigations Review scientific literature, analyze data, and evaluate technical feasibility across vaccine R&D pipelines. Identify promising candidates for Strep A vaccine development across academic, nonprofit, and industry settings. Conduct expert interviews and synthesize insights to inform funding recommendations. Produce detailed grant write-ups, analyses, and back-of-the-envelope calculations (BOTECs). 2. Grant Management and Portfolio Oversight Track grantee progress, assess milestones, and contribute to renewal or follow-up decisions. Conduct grantee check-ins and provide analytical support across the portfolio. Distill lessons learned to refine future strategy. 3. Strategic and Analytical Support Work closely with senior leadership to sharpen and expand global health R&D strategies. Monitor global research landscapes, identify emerging opportunities, and map pipeline gaps. Contribute to strategy documents, internal analyses, and donor communications. 4. External Engagement Represent Open Philanthropy at conferences, scientific workshops, and meetings. Build relationships with researchers, product development partnerships, and funders. Who They’re Looking For The ideal candidate has: 5+ years of experience (excluding graduate study) in fields such as immunology, microbiology, infectious disease, vaccine development, or related biomedical sciences. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (preferred, but not required). Strong analytical and quantitative reasoning skills, including comfort evaluating scientific data and assessing potential impact. Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in conveying complex scientific ideas. Strategic creativity, comfort with uncertainty, and openness to “hits-based giving”—funding high-upside opportunities even with low probabilities of success. Strong interpersonal skills and cultural fluency when working with global partners. Ability to travel for conferences, grantee meetings, and team gatherings. Ability to overlap several hours per week with U.S. Pacific and U.K. time zones. Preferred but not required: experience with Strep A, malaria, or translational R&D; knowledge of the global health R&D ecosystem; and familiarity with regulatory pathways, product development partnerships, and vaccine pipelines. Application Process Deadline: December 4, 2025 (11:59 p.m. PT) Selected candidates will complete a paid work test in December. Shortlisted candidates will participate in remote interviews and reference checks. Offer expected in February, with the start date flexible.
