The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is recruiting three Translator–Reviser (English/French) professionals for its Patents and Technology Sector in Geneva, Switzerland. These positions are part of the French Translation Section within the PCT Translation Division, which plays a key role in producing high-quality translations for international patent documentation under the Patent Cooperation Treaty system. The roles are graded at P4 level and are offered as fixed-term contracts of two years, with a maximum cumulative duration of five years. Organizational Context The positions are situated within the French Translation Section of the PCT Translation Division. This division is responsible for delivering publication-ready translations of scientific, technical, and legal documents submitted under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The work primarily involves translating and revising: Patent abstracts Scientific and technical reports Legal documentation related to patentability The overarching objective is to ensure that international patent information is accurately and consistently accessible in French, maintaining both linguistic precision and technical integrity. Purpose of the Role: Translator–Reviser The Translator–Reviser plays a central role in ensuring the quality and reliability of multilingual patent documentation. The position involves not only translation but also revision, quality assessment, and collaboration with technology systems, including AI-assisted translation tools. Key responsibilities include assessing translation quality, revising human and machine-generated texts, and ensuring adherence to established linguistic and technical standards. The incumbent also contributes to the improvement of translation workflows by engaging with emerging language technologies and artificial intelligence systems used in professional translation environments. Key Responsibilities The role covers a broad range of tasks across translation, quality assurance, training, and terminology management. 1. Translation and Revision Work The Translator–Reviser is responsible for translating and self-revising complex scientific and technical texts from English and at least one additional PCT language into French. The work must meet strict standards of accuracy, clarity, and timeliness, without requiring further review. They also revise translations produced by internal staff or external providers to ensure consistency, correct terminology usage, and compliance with institutional guidelines. 2. Quality Assessment and Feedback A core function of the role involves evaluating the quality of translations produced by both human translators and machine translation systems. The Translator–Reviser provides detailed feedback to improve linguistic accuracy and overall performance. 3. Collaboration with AI and Translation Technology The position requires close collaboration with technical teams to optimize AI-based translation systems. This includes adjusting prompts, testing outputs, and evaluating improvements in translation quality. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation tools, terminology databases, and AI-driven language technologies is essential. 4. Terminology and Research Work The incumbent contributes to the development and maintenance of specialized terminology databases. This includes identifying areas requiring terminological research and validating technical terms for use in official translations. 5. Training and Capacity Building The Translator–Reviser provides training and mentorship to translators, trainees, and external contractors. This includes developing guidelines, conducting training sessions, and supporting quality improvement initiatives within the division. 6. Recruitment and Assessment Support The role includes participation in the selection and evaluation of translation candidates and external service providers through testing and assessment processes. Required Qualifications and Skills Education Applicants must hold either: An advanced university degree in translation, modern languages, or a relevant scientific/technical field, or A first-level university degree in a relevant field combined with at least two additional years of professional experience in translation Professional Experience Candidates must have at least seven years of relevant professional experience, primarily in technical or scientific translation. Experience in intellectual property translation is considered an advantage. Language Requirements Essential: Native-level proficiency in French Excellent command of English Proficiency in at least one additional PCT publication language Desirable: Knowledge of additional languages such as Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish Technical and Professional Competencies Applicants are expected to demonstrate: High-level translation, revision, and editing skills Ability to interpret complex scientific, technical, and legal content Strong knowledge of translation technologies and AI-based systems Ability to work under strict deadlines with high accuracy Experience in mentoring and training others Strong communication skills in multicultural environments Familiarity with data analysis in translation workflows and intellectual property systems is considered an advantage. Work Environment and Conditions The position is based in Geneva, Switzerland, within an international civil service environment. Staff members are considered international civil servants and may be required to relocate or adapt to different assignments within the organization. The role offers a highly structured yet dynamic working environment focused on multilingual communication, innovation in translation technologies, and global intellectual property services. Salary and Contract Details The annual total remuneration for the P4 grade position is approximately USD 146,455, combining base salary and post adjustment allowances. Salaries are paid in Swiss francs and adjusted according to United Nations standards. The appointment is initially for two years, renewable based on performance, with a maximum total duration of five years in this specific role.
