Role Overview The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Global Lead for Energy Access and Equitable Development to provide strategic leadership across its global programmes focused on clean energy access, socio-economic development, and equitable energy transitions. This full-time, hybrid role requires a minimum of eight days per month in a WRI office and can be based in Mexico City, Bogotá, Bangalore, New Delhi, London, The Hague, Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Jakarta. About the Polsky Center for the Global Energy Transition The position sits within the WRI Polsky Center for the Global Energy Transition, which designs practical and scalable solutions to deliver a clean, affordable and reliable energy future. The Centre applies WRI’s research excellence, global networks and convening power to address persistent barriers to energy transformation. Its mission covers grid modernisation, investment mobilisation, clean energy workforce development, accelerated renewable deployment, and energy efficiency expansion. A core component of the Centre’s work is advancing equitable development through access to modern energy services. This includes strengthening rural energy systems, extending clean energy access to underserved communities, and ensuring that women and marginalised groups benefit from emerging opportunities in the global energy economy. WRI’s Energy Access Explorer (EAE) tool, which identifies areas with the greatest energy needs and investment potential, is central to these efforts. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership and Programme Delivery The Global Lead will oversee the Energy Access and Equitable Development team, ensuring coherent strategy, measurable outcomes and positive global impact. This includes setting clear objectives, supporting research excellence, and driving high-quality communication and outreach. The role requires collaboration with country teams, data specialists and communication experts to develop integrated approaches that link electrification with socio-economic development objectives. The Global Lead will coordinate cross-geographic learning, strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems, and connect global insights to local project implementation. They will supervise staff across multiple countries, cultivate a collaborative team culture, and contribute to hiring decisions within country offices. The role also includes financial oversight to ensure compliance with donor requirements and alignment with WRI’s financial standards. The Global Lead will also foster synergies within WRI’s global programmes, particularly those related to human systems transitions, energy access and equitable development, while shaping a pipeline of long-term, high-impact projects. Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation The position carries significant responsibility for developing and delivering the fundraising strategy for the Energy Access and Equitable Development pillar. This includes managing donor relationships, coordinating joint funding proposals, and securing high-value investments to support country and global initiatives. The Global Lead will work closely with development teams across WRI offices, the Director of Global Impact, and the Director for Research and Data to expand flexible funding, strengthen donor engagement, and align fundraising efforts with programme priorities. Stakeholder Engagement and Partnership Development The role requires active collaboration with a wide network of public and private actors, including governments, utilities, development institutions, civil society organisations and research institutes. The Global Lead will maintain strategic partnerships, promote knowledge exchange, and support global thought leadership on equitable energy access. They will work closely with communication teams to elevate WRI’s insights and strengthen global awareness of equitable energy transitions. This includes representing WRI in international forums, shaping global discourse and ensuring that WRI’s work resonates across diverse audiences. Candidate Profile Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in energy, public policy, international development, climate studies or a relevant field. At least ten years of professional experience, including five years of direct management responsibility, is required. Equivalent experience may substitute formal academic qualifications. Candidates must demonstrate deep understanding of equity in energy development, as well as technical, financial and policy dimensions of energy transitions across Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the United States. Experience leading global teams, managing multimillion-dollar budgets, securing major funding, and delivering complex international projects is essential. Strong communication skills, proven ability to engage diverse stakeholders, and an existing network of contacts across government, research, business and civil society are highly desirable.
