The Yenching Academy of Peking University is now inviting applications for its 2026 cohort of Yenching Scholars, one of the most prestigious fully funded postgraduate programs in China. Each year, the academy selects around 120 exceptional students from across the globe to pursue an interdisciplinary Master’s degree focused on the study of China. Approximately 75% of the scholars are international students, reflecting the academy’s global outlook and commitment to cross-cultural dialogue. Academic Vision and Program Overview The Yenching Academy offers an interdisciplinary Master’s program in China Studies, designed to deepen students’ understanding of China’s past, present, and future role in the world. Through courses taught in English, students engage with subjects spanning politics, history, economics, philosophy, law, and international relations. The program combines rigorous academic training with opportunities for practical engagement, preparing graduates to bridge cultural divides and contribute to global cooperation. Yenching Scholars live and study on Peking University’s historic campus, one of the most prestigious universities in Asia. Fellowship Benefits All selected Yenching Scholars receive a comprehensive fellowship package covering: Full tuition fees for the duration of the program. Accommodation on campus at Peking University. A monthly stipend to support living expenses. Round-trip travel costs between the scholar’s home country and Beijing. Field study funding, enabling hands-on research and exploration within China. These benefits ensure that every scholar can fully engage with the program’s academic and cultural opportunities without financial constraints. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field or be on track to graduate by August 31, 2026. Demonstrate an outstanding academic record and a strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China. Exhibit leadership potential, community involvement, and social responsibility. Possess strong English language proficiency. Peking University does not allow students to be simultaneously enrolled in other degree programs. English Language Requirements Applicants whose native language is not English must provide official test results meeting one of the following minimum scores: IELTS (Academic): Overall 7.0 TOEFL iBT: Overall 100 Cambridge English Scale (Advanced): Overall 185 CET 6: 600 TEM 4: Pass level of “良好” or above International applicants educated in English-taught programs may be exempt from submitting test scores. However, candidates from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan must still provide valid English proficiency results. Only scores obtained after September 1, 2024 are accepted, and tests such as TOEFL Home Edition, IELTS Online, or IELTS One Skill Retake are not eligible. Application Process and Required Materials Applications must be submitted through the Yenching Academy online portal, where candidates create an account and complete all required sections in English. The following documents must be uploaded: Completed online application form. Personal statement (maximum 750 words). Statement of research interest (maximum 1,500 words, excluding citations). Curriculum Vitae (CV). Official academic transcripts. Degree certificate(s) or proof of enrollment. Two academic recommendation letters, written by associate or full professors (or equivalent). For standardized English tests (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge), applicants must ensure that their scores are sent directly from the testing organizations to the Yenching Academy of Peking University. The TOEFL institution code is C488. Candidate Categories The Yenching Academy accepts applications from three main groups: Mainland Chinese Candidates: Applications for the 2025 Yenching Summer Experience close on May 16, 2025 (Beijing time). Candidates from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan: Applications for the 2026 cohort open in August 2025. Applicants from partner universities must first undergo internal pre-selection. International Candidates: Applications for the 2026 intake open in August 2025. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Those who have renounced Chinese citizenship must provide documentation dated before April 30, 2020, along with proof of nationality cancellation.
