The Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP) is now accepting applications for the 2026 Rising Experts Program, a flagship initiative designed to develop emerging foreign policy professionals into credible analysts, writers, and commentators. The application period opens November 1, 2025, and closes December 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Program Overview The Rising Experts Program runs for approximately one year, starting in February 2026, and is a part-time, unpaid fellowship tailored for graduate students and working professionals who can integrate writing into their existing schedules. The program focuses on producing high-quality foreign policy analysis through editorial collaboration, offering participants the opportunity to publish articles in national and international outlets, enhance their bylines, and build professional credibility. Participants are expected to dedicate 8–10 hours per month to research, writing, revisions, and cohort engagement. The program also emphasizes peer feedback, collaborative discussions, and opportunities to lead cohort meetings on areas of expertise. What You Will Do Rising Experts will: Publish regularly: Produce at least one article every two months (600–1,200 words) in your chosen area of expertise. Formats may include op-eds, analysis pieces, book reviews, or interviews. Work with editors: Collaborate closely with YPFP’s editorial team to strengthen arguments, refine analysis, and polish prose. Pitch strategically: Learn best practices for placing articles with key foreign policy outlets. Engage with your cohort: Offer feedback to peers, participate in discussions, and foster collaborative projects. Lead discussions: Facilitate at least one YPFP discussion group meeting on a topic in your area of expertise. Areas of Expertise Applicants can focus on regional or functional tracks, including: Regional: Africa Europe Indo-Pacific Latin America Middle East Functional: Climate & Energy Economics & Development Human Rights National Security Technology Candidates may also propose custom tracks if their area of expertise is not listed, such as diplomacy, international law, grand strategy, or immigration. Who Should Apply YPFP seeks candidates who demonstrate strong academic and professional experience in international relations or foreign policy. Key qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree 2+ years of professional experience (graduate students eligible) Demonstrated expertise in chosen focus area through coursework, professional work, or publications Exceptional analytical writing ability Age typically in the 20s to mid-30s Standout candidates often have prior publications, direct engagement with their region or issue set, ability to generate original perspectives on current debates, and a track record of meeting deadlines while incorporating editorial feedback. Graduate education in the focus area is an asset. Application Materials Applicants must submit: Cover Letter – Outline interest in the program, chosen area of expertise, alignment with professional goals, and proposed articles (1–2 pages, max 3 pages). CV or Resume – Highlight education, work experience, publications, language skills, and regional expertise (max 2 pages). Short-answer responses – Complete prompts in the application portal to demonstrate analytical thinking and topic selection. Writing Sample – Provide one non-academic writing sample (max 3 pages) demonstrating clear argumentation, sophisticated analysis, and accessible writing for a general audience. Selection Process The program is highly competitive, selecting 15–20 candidates annually from national and international applicants. Timeline: Late December 2025: Applications reviewed by editorial team Early January 2026: Writing assessments for top candidates Late January 2026: Finalist interviews Mid-February 2026: Final selections and offers Upon acceptance, Rising Experts must become dues-paying YPFP members for one year ($25), gaining access to the organization’s professional network, events, and discussion groups.
